What is the Meaning of Winter to You?: Polka's Pictures I

Fri Feb 25, 2011 9:06 PM EST
winter, snow, photography, not-news, foto-friday
By Polka14

Here is a photo of some trees. They look nice when covered in snow.

In this photo, I took a picture of a walking path with the nearby snow covered trees.

Here is another picture of trees. You should be able to see that the trees are green in color.

I like this particular tree. When not covered in snow, it is covered in green lichen.

Here is a waterfall with some snow covered tree branches in the view. I liked that.

More trees in the distance.

This is called "Round lake". It is a small lake and I liked that I could see the reflections of the trees in the water.

What is the meaning of winter to me?

Well, winter was and will always be a very special time of year for me. Where I lived for the majority of my life, I lived in an area that had moderately cold winters. The most special time of winter and the cold season was the arrival of snowfall in my home city. It usually came once per year or a few times in some years but they were always special to me. I didn't live in the majority of the nation that receives snowfall often. Others may have developed a different philosophical approach to snowfall but my own personal experiences allowed me to enjoy its existence and appreciate its beauty on the landscape. When I was younger, I would use snow as something I could hold and manipulate to my liking. Now my older self appreciates its aesthetic beauty more and enjoys a walk in the snow and the special sound made when walking in a layer of frozen snow or ice.

I liked the surrounding landscape where I am staying now and the land of southern Washington provides areas that are good for viewing. I took pictures of this land with recent snowfall taken on Wednesday morning. I am no professional like some people on this site. I am most definitely new to taking photographs and will always see it as something to do as an enjoyable hobby but I enjoy the beauty of nature and I think it is a good thing to show it to others that can not see it.

Please read and comment on this. I would like to know what winter means to you. Everyone must have their own point of view on this because everyone lives in different areas of America or in foreign nations. Someone that lives in Hawaii has probably never even seen snow outside of photographs or other media. And please enjoy the pictures. This is my first experience with showing photographs but please critique and give me helpful hints on how to make my photos better next time.

Thank you for reading and viewing my pictures!

Alright then. I will accept comments but I will not tolerate personal attacks or violations of the true CoH. I will not honor secret amendments or parts of the CoH. Furthermore any post deemed off-topic or inflammatory will be deleted at my discretion.

I am waiting to join the photography group but I have not been accepted yet. I would greatly appreciate it if someone clipped this to that group and maybe helped somehow to get me in that group faster. This is my first time doing this but I welcome criticism to these photos. Winter is beautiful and I want to hear what people think of it.

Thank you.

Hey, Polka, the photography group tends to be pretty darn friendly, and it doesn't matter if you thing Bush or Obama is the best thing since sliced bread.

So chillax, and share with us.

Polka, I've had a request to join the Photography group pending forever as well. Not sure if anyone is administering it anymore or not. But the folks here in the NV Photographers group are very active so I think you should enjoy it!

I'll clip it for your Polka! You have some really great pictures here! The scenery is beautiful, I particularly like the Round lake picture! And the one named "More trees in the distance." shows us just how much snow there is, it's lovely too!

I just sent you an invite as well.

You might want to edit your article and add the tag "foto-friday" as lots of folks follow that tag.

Winter means a time for rest, recovery and renewal, a time that you're able to look into the woods and actually see.

I used to love to just ride my horse through the snow listening to the hooves crunching and the horse breathing. Such a peaceful time indeed!

These are really great pictures Polka, looks like you got a load of snow ! Keep up the good work.
Winter to me means getting together with family, coffee shops, book reading, sitting in front of the fire and skiing.

Thanks for the compliments. All those are great things to do in winter time. All the snow is gone now but we had a good day with snow in this area and we did have a decent snowfall this year. The higher elevations gets more snow more often though.

I thought those pictures of yours looked a little familiar like Pacific Northwest type photos, I am a bit north of you in Redmond, WA and we had a snow last week, but its all gone now also. Looks like we both got about the same amount of snow, now its cold.....20 degree's !

It was cold in the last several days in the 20 degree range but no more snow. Specifically, it is in the small town of Camas, slightly east of Vancouver, WA.

We got about 2" of snow around Wednesday and its still hanging around as its 21〬 now and no melting. I have been to Camas once, went to Lacamas Lake which was nice and explored downtown which was also neat. A friend of mine is from there so he took me on the tour.

Yea this cold weather in the 20's is crazy ! I am ready for Spring !!

Polka you are a fantastic photographer! Every one of these shots is so beautiful and serene. I lived in Portland Oregon most of my life and winter meant snow, hopefully. We even did "snow dances" if the snow was slow coming. Now I live on Hawaii and winter means migrating whales, dolphins and big waves. Thank you for sharing the beauty in your life.

Polka you are a fantastic photographer!

Thank you. I plan on going to other places if I can but I am always busy so that might not occur for some time but I greatly appreciate the compliments. What picture did you like best?

I lived in Portland Oregon most of my life and winter meant snow, hopefully.

I lived across the border in Vancouver and snow usually occured once per year if the weather was generous but I always anticipated the yearly snowfall. I am in the region now so I was able to photograph the nearby area with the most recent snowfall.

Now I live on Hawaii and winter means migrating whales, dolphins and big waves.

I heard that Hawaii was doesn't experience any real changes during the year and always has a constant temperature in the 70' F range.

Thank you for sharing the beauty in your life.

Thank you for appreciating it.

The waterfall is my favorite although they all are very lovely.
Now you can understand our need for "snow dances"! Vancouver and Portland are buddies!
Hawaii is wonderful and we are in winter so in the morning it is 67 degrees. We are so thin skinned here that we wear long pants and sweatshirts until the temperature reaches 80 degrees. Sometimes even socks.
Mahalo for showing what I love in photos but don't in real life.

Gorgeous Photos!

For me winter means I save on the electric bill (no A/C) oranges are actually orange (the rest of the year we get them green) and the water at the beach is a little colder:)

Wow! Polka, you're an excellent photographer! These are all beautiful, but I think the winter waterfall is my favorite.

The winter season varies in temperature and severity in Virginia, so each year is different. Sometimes it's quite warm, and other times we have lots of snow and ice. Overall, I agree with Rottlady, that it's a period of rest. There's less work to do on the farm, and I'm more likely to stay in on weekends and read a book.

Thanks for your article, and welcome to the NV Photographers.

Polka, loved your pictures and article.

Much to my husband's chagrin, I get excited at the first sign of snow. Sometimes I believe I can actually smell it in the air before it comes.

My love of it is another childhood love I refuse to part with. I remember playing in it until my fingers were swollen and painful. I would go into the house, cry a little with the pain as my fingertips swelled and itched, then be right back outside after a recovery!

Now that I am older, I am awed by its beauty. It sparkles in moonlight and sunlight, falls without a sound, makes everything and everyone slow down. We moved to a higher elevation in my state 4 years ago and I declared "I have finally found winter!" Did I ever! Winter snow of 2009-2010 started 12-18-09 and we saw bare ground about 4 times between that time and spring! This year was slightly better snow-amount-wise, but it started snowing in November of 2010. That is not to say I don't get a little tired of it this time of year, but that just shows how fickle I can be.

Anyway, enjoyed your article and pictures and I can relate. I also agree it is time when nature gets a rest, covered in her soft blanket of snow. She deserves it.

I love snow, but in Western Washington hardly ever see the stuff).

And I think you can smell snow coming!

Think maybe the weather service would hire us? It's not Doppler technology, but it's pretty reliable ;)

I think they call that 'snozzler radar', and it also works well for summer thunderstorms ;-)

Polka- Very nice and natural sense of composition in these chilly landscapes. Enjoyed the chance to view them.
